Little Lake – Ohaupo
Margot Leonie Luise Philips
This work is from a series of small panorama landscapes by Philips that began in 1972. Her bold use of colour and sharply delineated forms are reminescent of works by Rita Angus.
Margot Leonie Luise Philips (1907–1988) was born in Germany. In 1938 she fled the onslaught of the Nazi regime and settled in Hamilton, New Zealand where she was to remain for the rest of her life. A self-confessed amateur artist who did not begin painting until her 50s, Philips attended summer school classes by Geoff Fairburn and Colin McCahon at the Adult Education Department, University of Auckland. Over the next 20 years she produced a significant body of paintings and was particularly passionate about representations of the New Zealand landscape.
