Description
The von Tempsky family crest – variant form. This illustration of the von Tempsky crest differs from the seal and the crest illustrated in Taf.453 of Preussischer Adel. Family tradition has it that an ancestor rode into a Turkish camp, slew the commander and was himself wounded by three arrows before delivering the head of the Turk to his general. A further elaboration is that the head was that of Genghis Khan, delivered on a silver tray to Duke Henry of Prussia. For this deed the family was given their coat of arms. Such a tradition could explain the oriental head.
