Gumbon rubber

Description
In 1974 Waikato Museum acquired a selection of items, including this rubber, from Graham Jackson. Jackson was a New Zealand anthropologist who spent time living with and researching the Kopon and the Kalam people of the Lower Kaironk Valley in Papua New Guinea.

Jackson fieldnotes: This appears to be rubber from a gumbon tree. It is burned to obtain charcoal for blackening the face. It is also stretched between two hands and rolled off the front of the thigh to make a twang noise.
