In 1974 Waikato Museum acquired a selection of items, including this beater, from Graham Jackson. Jackson was a New Zealand anthropologist who spent time living with and researching the Kopon and the Kalam people of the Lower Kaironk Valley in Papua New Guinea.

Jackson fieldnotes: Bark cloth beaten. Circular section grooved longitudinally (about 3/4 the way around) with shaped handle. Made from an unidentified pine called jmph. Bark beaten to make hats, covers, hair coverings. Roll of bark stripped from tree; outer layer shaved off and the inner layer is used and left to dry overnight. Before beating it is sprinkled with water then flattened and spread out over a log and beaten with the wooden beater.
