Untitled [Bridge Over River]

Maker
Margot Leonie Luise Philips
Production date
Circa 1951-Circa 1953
Description
German-born Jewish artist Margot Philips (1902 – 1988) began her artistic career only after her arrival in Kirikiriroa Hamilton in 1938. Enrolling in a series of adult art classes, Philips first experimented with landscape painting in the 1950s, rising in prominence as a landscape painter through the 1960s and 1970s.

Philips attended sketching classes under Geoff Fairburn, held at scenic spots along the Waikato River. This early painting of a river scene and bridge was likely produced under Fairburn’s tutelage.

On the reserve of this painting is another student work depicting taonga from Oceania. Philips attended the annual Auckland Residential Summer School in Art and Design during the 1950s, first at Ardmore Teachers’ Training College, and later at Auckland Art Gallery. The adult students were directed to go to the Auckland War Memorial Museum and sketch the artefacts. The painting on the back of this work likely depicts artefacts on display at the Museum.
