Description
During the 1950s German-born Jewish artist Margot Philips (1902 – 1988) attended annual Auckland Residential Summer Schools in Art and Design, first at Ardmore Teachers’ Training College, and later at Auckland Art Gallery. This very early student work was made while attending classes at Ardmore Teachers’ Training College under the tutelage of Arthur Hipwell.
Philips eventually launched a career as one of the Waikato’s leading twentieth-century artists. Philips first experimented with landscape painting in the 1950s, and then rose in prominence through the 1960s and 1970s.
