Loom and weaving example

Description
This is a backstrap loom. The fibre used on Santa Cruz is made from two species of banana plant, one of them being black. The warp is a double warp, the ends being knotted. The total length is approximately 2000mm. On the Reef Islands the weaving is only practised in the east and articles are traded with the west. There are male and female weavers but the art is only passed down through the family. In 1967 there was only one woman left who knew how to weave. In 1977 only a handful of men were weaving.
