Description
Kaitotehi on the Waikato, Mr Ashwell's Mission Station. Pencil drawing heightened with watercolour, title inscribed in the artist's hand. On reverse, a pencil sketch of Ashwell's home and school, as well as notes on visit. Dec 17th Sunday, Kaitotehi: "The native service this morning was held in the school room as the morning was wet. there is a chapel by the riverside, rudely ornamented inside with native scroll patterns in black and white on the beams and posts but it is now out of repair and only used in fine weather. The boys came over in the morning from Papepe two miles off dressed in blue serge shirts and white canvas trowsers."
