Volume IV of Bullock-Webster's New Zealand diaries.
Harry Bullock-Webster was born in the UK in 1855. At the age of 19 he joined the Hudson’s Bay Company and spent five years in Canada before returning to his family home at Ludlow, UK, in 1879. Two years later he came to New Zealand as agent for Auckland businessman and land speculator, Thomas Russell. Between 1881 and 1884 Harry Bullock-Webster travelled around the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, East Coast and Whanganui districts visiting the large agricultural estates in which Russell had interests. In 1884 Bullock-Webster married Maud Williamson, daughter of James Williamson, and took over the 700 acre Lake House property adjoining Williamson’s Rukuhia Estate. He was also later owner of the Riverlea homestead – originally the property of James McPherson (70th Regiment). Harry Bullock-Webster was a very keen huntsman and was responsible for the formation of the Waikato Hunt Club in the 1890s. In an abbreviated version of his diaries published in 1935 as Memories of Sport and Travel Fifty Years Ago Harry Bullock-Webster wrote that throughout his life he had “consistently loved the things which, as a boy, my Dad taught me were best worth caring for: - HORSES and HOUNDS”. This love is amply illustrated in his diaries.
