Model canoe

Maker
Marcus Waifura
Description
Model canoe representing a parafuraikao (ceremonial bonito canoe), black and inlaid with nautilus shell called reoreo. Kworogara wood.

Base is two fish – probably bonito (maiau). Less life-size bonito canoes made today. These model ones made for tourist market. Bonito canoes were very important as a test of a carver's ability as well as because of their connection with the sacred bonito – first catch of the season was not eaten because of its sacredness.
