Tableau of figures using a coconut cream extractor

Maker
Wapanafaru
Description
Stylised tableau of a coconut cream extractor, carved by an artist named Wapanafaru from the village of Toghorei on the Island of Owariki (formerly Santa Catalina). This tableau exemplifies the style of 'New' Solomons Art. In the carving, coconut gratings have been placed under a pole, which two men bring down upon the flesh. Collected liquid runs into the bowl below, decorated with nautilus shell inlay. A design has been etched on the large head of the extractor.

The tableau features the stylisation of the human form elemental to Solomons carving, as well as the characteristic limited colour, black staining of local wood and use of nautilus shell to accentuate eyes and other features.
