Milford Sound
Maker
John Barr Clarke Hoyte
Production date
1880
Description
The founder of the Auckland Arts Society, Hoyte was a British artist who was resident in New Zealand between 1860 and 1879. He imposed an 'English frame' on the landscape, seeing it as a grand, remote, majestic country that would strike awe into the hearts of the new European settlers. In Hoyte's work, the natural features of the landscape always dwarf evidence of civilisation such as boats, cottages and people.
