Bowl – apira
Maker
Stanley Wagore
Description
The female figure holding this bowl (apira) has just been bought as a bride and is going out with a bowl of susugu pudding (made from mashed taro and yam, banana, coconut milk and nuts), so as not to leave her house empty-handed. Initially brides were taken to their parents-in-law's house. The husband later moved into the house of the bride and her parents. There is a life-like rendition of armbands or tattoos and lugs through the woman's ear-lobes.
