Newspaper – Te Pihoihoi Mokemoke i runga i te Tuanui, No 1, Pepuere 2, 1863.
This newspaper in te reo Maaori, edited and published by John Gorst, was established initially to counteract the Kiingitanga newspaper ‘Te Hokioi e Rere Atu Na’, produced before the invasion of Ngaaruawaahia by General Duncan Alexander Cameron’s troops in 1863. Only eight months prior to that Gorst’s own printing press (which only produced five issues of ‘Te Pihoihoi...’ ) was forcibly removed by members of Ngaati Maniapoto. Gorst himself was expelled from the Waikato following this incident. The press that produced the ‘Te Pihoihoi...’ newspaper now rests in the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington.
John Eldon Gorst (1835–1916) was born in England. Following the death of his father, Gorst set sail for New Zealand in 1860. After a brief period teaching at Mission Schools throughout the Waikato region, he was appointed a magistrate. When he and his family were driven out in 1863, Gorst returned to England where he became a significant figure in British politics. Following his retirement from politics in 1902, he returned to New Zealand for a brief visit in 1906 as a special commissioner to the International Exhibition in Christchurch.
