Description
Kete made of muka (processed flax fibre). The woven patterns are whakapae (side-stitch) and mawhitiwhiti (cross-stitch). The pattern is formed by weaving a plain row, a plaited row that resembles a three-ply plait, followed by another plain row. The final row uses a muka strand dye using tanekaha bark – reddish/brown – that is woven into the plain row. A large band of reddish pheasant feathers is in the middle of the kete and the woven pattern described above is repeated. Handles are made using a four-ply plait and dyed with tanekaha.
