Description
German-born Jewish artist Margot Philips (1902 – 1988) is one of the Waikato’s leading twentieth-century artists. Philips’ career as an artist began after she arrived in Kirikiriroa Hamilton in 1938, first experimenting with landscape painting in the 1950s, and then rising in prominence through the 1960s and 1970s. While many of Philips’ paintings explore the Waikato landscape, this work was inspired by the stone walls Philips saw on a trip to the United Kingdom’s Lake District. Philips was inspired by how ancient the stonework was, and how different the stone walls were to New Zealand wire fencing.
