Description
This particular work is a portrait of Kewene Te Haho of Ngaati Naho, Ngaati Haua and Ngaati Whawhakia from Te Makaka, Aotea Harbour. Born around 1813, Te Haho fought in the 1830 Taumatawiwi battle between Te Waharoa of Tainui and Ngāti Maru of Hauraki and accompanied Te Waharoa in 1835 on a fighting excursion to Rotorua and Maketu. He is thought to have passed away in 1902 at the age of 90. This portrait of Kewene Te Haho is a copy by an unknown artist, of one of a number of versions Gottfried Lindauer made. One version was exhibited at the St Louis World's Fair in 1904 and is now held in the collections of the Auckland Art Gallery.

Gottfried (Bohumir) Lindauer (1839-1926) was born in Pilsen, Bohemia in the Austrian Empire. The son of nurseryman, Lindauer demonstrated a talent for the arts from an early age. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Arts for seven years before embarking on a career as a portrait painter, travelling throughout Europe. In 1873 Lindauer arrived in New Zealand where he was to be based for the rest of his life. His artistic endeavours were modest until he painted his first portrait of a Maori named Moses. Lindauer went on to become one of the most recognised painters of the Maori subject, completing hundreds of portraits during his lifetime.
