Asylum Harbour [Ka ecologies]

Maker

Production date

Description
This painting offers the viewer an abstracted, composite view of the Kawhia landscape. While the colours are largely naturalistic, the multiple perspectives depicted in the work counteract the realism of the details of landforms and vegetation. Two horizon lines at the top and bottom of the painting frame a central section that creates the impression of looking up at a canopy of trees. While individual sections of the painting may be true to life, the expressive whole suggests a new kind of seeing and mapping the landscape that challenges the traditional realist approach.
