Country Post Office, Coroglen

Maker
E. Mervyn Taylor
Production date
1960
Description
This painting shows the Coroglen Post Office in the building it inhabited until 1969 when it was relocated to the front of the local Tavern. In 2006 postal services were moved to nearby Whitianga. This is one of a number of watercolour landscapes from around the Coromandel Peninsula produced by E. Mervyn Taylor. Although Taylor lived in Karori, Wellington he often went on sketching trips throughout New Zealand and would work up drawings into more resolved watercolours upon his return.

Taylor (1906-1964) was born and educated in Auckland. He studied at Elam art school, and then at Wellington Technical School where after training as an engraver, he worked as a commercial art illustrator. He was especially interested in natural subjects which alongside his sensitive depiction of Maori themes became defining elements of his artistic career. In 1957 he set up his own publishing house, Mermaid Press, and published a book of his own works ‘Engravings on Wood.’ Other projects showcased Taylor’s extensive skills including painting, engraving, murals and sculpture. Although he died at the age of 57, Taylor had already gained an impressive list of achievements, including exhibitions of his work in Japan, New York and Russia.
