Description
This rural landscape scene was a favourite of Watson. Its immediacy and unlaboured approach became a signature of the artist’s regionalist style, which tended to focus on subjects that typified the Waikato lifestyle and surroundings.
Violet Watson (1906-92) was born in Taranaki and moved with her family to Waikato. As an avid art enthusiast Watson studied painting under local painters Adele Younghusband and Ida Carey making a name in her own right through her uncompromising depiction of the local landscape. In 1974 she became the first female artist to win the coveted Kelliher Award which she also won in 1977 as well as a string of merit awards.
