This watercolour scene depicts Maori daily life on the river still considered a romantic subject when this work was painted in 1925.

Ilene Rosa Stitchbury (1898-1991) was born in Auckland. She married Canadian poet Laurence Dakin and lived in Canada for some years before returning to teach art at Secondary Schools in Auckland. A self-taught artist Stitchbury, painted most of her life but was not interested in selling her work. She passed away in Auckland, just one year after her first work appeared in auction.
