Kaakahu / cloak
Description
The Maaori word for a kaakahu (cloak) made from harakeke muka (flax fibre) and tassels of dog hair is called maahiti waero (eighteenth century). This kaakahu is made using a double-paired twining weaving technique.
The body is decorated with a dark-brown rolled cord (hukahuka – possibly kuri) arranged in rows. The lower kaupapa edge is fringed.
