Single barrel shotgun

Production date
Circa 1800
Description
With the arrival of Europeans, Maaori began introducing firearms to brutal intertribal battles. Valued for the ability to inflict injury or death over long distances, these weapons became increasingly prominant as symbols of status. Some would be carved and decorated with Maaori designs as a mark of respect. The word "Utu" is carved in the wood handle and "Not for ball" engraved in the barrel.
