Brief Description This hei tiki or figure carved from pounamu or greenstone is a fine example of these highly regarded objects. Often named for a significant ancestor these pieces were passed down through the generations. Pounamu is found only in the South Island making it an expensive and sort after material by those in the North. It was often traded or looted during intertribal exchanges.
