Description
This kumete or bowl was discovered by a diver in Lake Mangakaware, a 40-acre lake North of Pirongia, before 1968. The diver later offered it to a pawn/curiosity shop in 1971 where it was subsequently bought and kept for a number of years. Thought to have been produced around the 16th–17th century, and probably for everyday use, this kumete has been tempered or damaged in a fire at some stage in its life. Many Maaori items, especially those made from wood, were discarded or hidden in swamps during the large scale fighting between the 1830s–1870s.
