Maker
Rangimarie Hetet
Production date
1988
Description
Dame Rangimarie Hetet made this cloak in 1988 at the age of 96. Her daughter, Diggeress Te Kanawa, completed the taniko border. The cloak is made from muka (processed flax fibre) and is decorated with weka and pheasant feathers. The twisted three-ply thrums are made from muka and dyed with black paru mud using traditional Maori dying techniques. These thrums are called karure. The base of the cloak is finished with a narrow yellow and black taniko and tasselled fringe.
