Description
Adele Younghusband's style shows economy with the use of paint which gives a lightness to her work. Still life was a favourite theme throughout her life and she constantly experimented with style and media.
Adela Mary Roche (1878–1969) was born in Te Awamutu, Waikato. She originally trained as a photographic retoucher in Hamilton, but also drew and painted when given the opportunity. In 1905 she married Frank Younghusband in Christchurch. In 1919 after separating from her husband, Younghusband relocated to the North where she was to remain until 1934 when she returned to Hamilton. Although unsettled and constantly moving, Younghusband continued to paint. She founded the Whangarei Arts and Literary Society (precursor to the Northland Society of Arts) in 1927 and alongside her close friend Ida Carey also established the Waikato Society of Arts in 1934.
