Brief Description Victorian satin men's waistcoat acquired from the" Colonial Cottage" in Hamilton when the cottage was dismantled 1972-3. Most distinctive about the style of this vest is it's deep horse-shoe shape opening in the front. It also has an extra buttonhole for a watch chain to pass through. This style of vest deepened and widened again in 1890's. Black was the usual colour for evening dress until the 1890's when white increased in popularity. Black was retained for dinner wear. Single breasted vests were always most popular for evening.
